Located in Orlando FL: How about the weather?
Orlando is located at the approximate geographic center of the state of Florida. One of Orlando's most noted features, is its year-round, mild weather. The area's average year-round temperature is a comfortable 72.4 degrees, and so it is a natural choice for attractions that require good weather year-round, such as nearby DisneyWorld and NASA.
Hurricanes are usually not considered a great threat to the city of Orlando, because, to reach this area, they must pass over a substantial stretch of land and, in so doing, lose much of their strength. Prior to the year 2004, FutureQuest was able to note that it had been 60 years since a dangerous hurricane had hit Orlando. It really is a rare event. However, in 2004, not one, not two, not even three... but FOUR hurricanes hit the state of Florida in less than 8 weeks! This type of event had never happened in Florida before, however, in 1886 four hurricanes did hit the state of Texas in the same hurricane season. Obviously, this is an extremely rare event! Nevertheless, FutureQuest's Data Center was forced to prove its ability to handle three of the four hurricanes in a row and it did so with flying colors! Hurricane Ivan did not cross Orlando and therefore was not a threat to the FutureQuest Data Center.
FutureQuest was prepared! Some considered FutureQuest's preparedness a waste of money prior to the hurricanes of 2004. After the hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Jeanne it all began to make sense to them. FutureQuest's installation of state-of-the-art hurricane shutters on all of the perimeter windows within the office area of our suite (there are obviously no perimeter windows within the Data Center itself as it is wisely located in the center of the building for further protection), consistent maintenance of our Mitsubishi 75kVA UPS as well as our KatoLight, 375kVA turbo-charged generator, are part of what kept FutureQuest online all of the time before, during, and after each hurricane mother nature sent our way!
The above image shows one of the hurricane shutters on one of the office windows. If you click on this image, you will be shown a video of the shutter in operation.
These motorized (w/ manual override) metal shutters have been installed to go from ceiling to floor rather than just over the window area itself for added protection. Once they reach the floor the motor continues to push for a few seconds to ensure they are locked in tight!
FutureQuest is proud of its Data Center and the city we chose to locate it in. Natural disasters can happen anywhere. This is why FutureQuest has always upheld a deep respect for mother nature and will always remain prepared. August and September of 2004 brought Mother Nature's fury to our location and we were ready. It may be another 50 to 100 years before she returns to test us again, or it may be next week, either way, FutureQuest remains prepared!
